How PR Can Maximize M&A Exit Value For Government Contractors

At the end of last year, I wrote an op-ed for Washington Technology on commonalities for government contractor clients that have had successful M&A exits when it comes to PR and marketing strategies. For B2G brands thinking about an exit for 2026, this analysis is useful for the final quarter PR planning so that you are set up for success.

It’s worth repeating that the most successful exits share a core set of marketing traits: they stand out, target precisely, integrate PR early, and position leadership as visible thought leaders.

Key marketing strategies that drive higher valuations:

  • Differentiate, don’t commoditize: Avoid generic “innovative” messaging — acquirers seek unique capabilities and new market inroads.
  • Target specific buyers: Treat the United States Department of Defense not as one customer but as many — tailor messaging by branch, unit, and mission priority.
  • Mine customer ROI stories: Collaborate with sales early to build case studies that fuel media coverage, awards, and analyst credibility.
  • Start PR early in contract pursuits: Launch awareness and credibility campaigns during RFP or pre-solicitation stages to influence decision-makers.
  • Focus on narratives over numbers: Emphasize market impact and mission outcomes, not just contract dollar values.

Additional success drivers:

  • Integrate PR across marketing: Eliminate silos to ensure brand cadence and visibility across paid, owned, and earned channels.
  • Don’t wait for perfect branding: Activate PR in parallel with branding refreshes to avoid missed windows.
  • Elevate CXO visibility: Visible founders and CEOs can boost brand equity and even share price — the Golin CEO Impact Index found the most visible Fortune 250 CEOs outperformed peers by 80% annually.

PR alone can’t mask weak performance or market fit — but for contractors with strong offerings, these strategies consistently build enterprise value and create the conditions for a successful exit. Learn more about our B2G PR Services.
